Obituary for James Timothy Burns

Print
Age 75, passed away October 28, 2018, after living with Type 1 Diabetes for 37 years. He is preceded in death by his father James Thomas , and mother Mary Jane (nee McHugh) Burns and brother Dan Burns.

Beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend, Tim is survived by his wife Kathryn Ann (nee Klingberg) Burns, his daughters Colleen (Chris) Harristhal and Tracy Burns, grandsons Tim, Cole, Trey, Max, Sam and Alex, Brother Mike (Eileen) Burns, and sisters Anne Marie Borne, and Mary (Tom) Williams, his business partner Rob (Mitzi) Forsland, many nieces and nephews and countless friends.

Tim always looked for the good in people and life and cared passionately about those he loved and his many interests including car racing, thoroughbred horse breeding and racing, deep sea fishing, golfing, wood-working, collecting exotic cars, and international and family travel. Tim was an avid reader and loved to cook. He read hundreds of cookbooks and magazines over the years, collecting the recipes in file folders. He had many favorite dishes, but the most requested recipe was for his “top secret” chicken wings. Tim’s grandsons were the warmest part of his heart and he enjoyed every moment he was able to spend with them.

Tim graduated from De La Salle High School in Minneapolis in 1961 and then the University of Minnesota’s Journalism School, where he was a member of the Zeta Psi fraternity. Tim met his partner Rob in 1968 and embarked on what would be life-long careers together with an idea, no money, only long hours of sweat equity – and one employee. They built their original marketing company into an insurance brokerage which later led to their being co-founders of an international insurance/reinsurance marketing firm based in Amsterdam which ultimately did business in 48 countries. Along the way they started an operation which sold consumer fastener storage products, a business process company, and were founding partners in two South African wineries which sprung from relationships formed out of the international firm. In all, these enterprises employ/employed more than 300 people.

Celebration of Life on Saturday November 10th, 5-8 PM, with tributes and eulogies 6-7 PM at Hazeltine National Golf Club, 1900 Hazeltine Blvd, Chaska. Memorials preferred to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Fund and the Burns Family Foundation.
