Obituary for Elizabeth Jeanne Scheurer (Newberg)

Elizabeth "Betty" Scheurer, RN,CCRN
Age 88 of Minneapolis, MN. Reported off on December 6, 2018, and was welcomed home by her Savior, husband Fritz, and sons Karl Anton and Frederick. Celebrating her life, legacy and influence are daughters, Constance and Elizabeth, granddaughter Betsy (Jeff) Anderson, great-grandsons Karl and George,Brazilian kids Guta and Henrique, hosts of friends and professional colleagues.

Betty was a devoted wife, mother, and the consummate nurse; a pioneer in the establishment of cardiovascular nursing as a specialty. Betty's career spanned the early years of open-heart surgery at the University of Minnesota where you were "flying by the seat of your pants, always learning and inventing" to retiring in a state-of-the-art CV-ICU, never losing sight of the patient amidst all the technology.

Betty was a champion of nursing education and was instrumental in the establishment of the local chapter of the American Association of Critical Care Nurses (AACN) later serving as a national board member. An excellent teacher and wise preceptor, Betty always insisted that her charges "Look at the patient not just the monitors" and asking, "How can you affect the quality of your patient's day?" Many a fledgling ICU nurse learned valuable skills from Betty and many a medical resident got an earful when they wrote an order that Betty found deficient; this only happened once for them.

Betty was also active in her faith community who supported her during more than one difficult time in her life. Betty established volunteer service days, chaired committees, prepared food and served weddings and events with the formidable ladies of the Ruth Circle.

The family wishes to extend their sincere thanks to the entire staff of The Pines in Richfield, Grace Hospice and her sweet girls from Home Instead Senior Care who provided such loving and meticulous care that met Betty's high standards.

Memorial service at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, 4100 Lyndale Avenue South, Sunday, January 6th, 2019 at 3 PM with visitation beginning at 2 PM. Memorials preferred to Bethlehem Lutheran Church.
